The reality is that for most people turning 65, the transition from the regular healthcare market or group insurance to Medicare can be overwhelming. Here’s a Medicare checklist to avoid potential hassles and make moving to Medicare easier for you.

  • Mark Your Calendar.

Enrollment in Medicare is restricted to specific enrollment periods. When you turn 65, you have the longest enrollment time, known as the time, known as the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). This period includes the month of your 65th birthday, as well as the three months before and after your birthday, for a total of seven months.

  • Check Your Enrollment Status.

Will you be automatically enrolled, or do you need to manually enroll? Remember, it depends on whether or not you’re taking Social Security Income. Chances are, you'll need to manually enroll.

  • Make a List of Your Doctors.

Not all doctors accept Medicare, and the different Medicare Advantage plans often have doctor networks. Having a list of your doctors on hand makes it easy to see if they will accept your new insurance plan.

  • Make a List of Your Medications.

Each Medicare plan offers different coverage for prescription drugs, based on their formulary. When evaluating plans for better coverage, it is extremely important that you shop around for prescription drug costs. Having a list ready will simplify this process and help you save money.

  • Investigate Additional Benefits.

Some plans offer additional benefits, such as dental, vision and hearing coverage, or even fitness and healthy living discounts, but many plans still leave large gaps in coverage that can be filled with low-cost alternatives and options. It’s important to what’s available to you, and even moreso, what is not.
