When you become qualified for Medicare, you’ll either be automatically enrolled or you’ll need to manually enroll. The difference between these two comes down to whether or not you’re receiving Social Security Income. You are not required to draw Social Security Income to enroll in Medicare.
If you are currently drawing Social Security Income prior to turning age 65, you will be enrolled into Medicare Parts A & B automatically, and 90 days before the month of your 65th birthday you’ll receive your red, white and blue Medicare card as pictured below, and your Part B premium will be automatically deducted from your monthly Social Security check.
If you are not drawing Social Security Income when you
approach age 65, then as early as 90 days prior to the month of your 65th birthday, you’ll need to manually enroll into Medicare by contacting the contacting the Social Security Administration.

Medicare can only assist you once you are enrolled in Medicare, but the Social Security Administration determines your Medicare eligibility and processes your enrollment.
